Local Ballplayer Chosen to Represent the USA Overseas!

Washington High School freshman, Bobby Smith, has been chosen to represent the USA and Toledo, OH as a member of an elite baseball team traveling to the Netherlands this summer. As a member of Coast to Coast Baseball he will compete in the 15th annual Apeldoorn Baseball Series (July 3 - 12, 2004) against top amateur teams from around Europe.

Smith showcased his skills for the Coast to Coast staff at a recent tryout held at Marietta College.  At the tryout he was evaluated in four areas: hitting, fielding, arm strength and speed. Each year Coast to Coast sees 1500-2000
players at a series of nationwide tryouts.  Additionally, the organization evaluates hundreds of applications from players unable to attend a tryout event. From this pool approximately 300 roster spots - comprising 20-25 teams - are filled with players seeking to play at one of the game's highest levels.

Coast to Coast Baseball is a national baseball and youth development program.  Based in Marietta, Ohio, the 7-year old program has taken over 1000 players from 46 different states to compete in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and Puerto Rico. Geared toward serious players interested in pursuing a career beyond high school, Coast to Coast's goal is to provide amateur ballplayers with outstanding:

  • INSTRUCTION - by top coaches who have played or coached at the collegiate or professional level

  • COMPETITION - against some of the world's best international talent

  • EDUCATION - during seminars on topics like the college-recruiting process and the negative effects of performance-enhancing drugs and alcohol.

  • CULTURE - an opportunity make international friends and to learn about a foreign culture and way of life

In addition to his love for baseball, Smith is a member of the National Honors Society at Washington HS and the church youth group at Bluffton Baptist Church. He hopes to attend either Ohio State University or Kent State where he would like to play baseball and major in Chemistry.

In order to maintain his amateur status, Smith will be seeking to raise his share of the team's cost. Persons interested in making a donation can contact the Smith family at (xxx) xxx-xxxx or Coast to Coast Baseball directly.
