Australia – the Destination

Unknown to many Americans, Australia has one of the world’s top Olympic softball teams. Additionally, this sparsely populated country has produced over 50 current Major and Minor Leaguer baseball players and boasts a professional league of their own.  Sports in general and fastpitch specifically is a passion Down Under. Aussie softball is organized on a club system where individuals play for the club of their choice. Some of the strongest clubs traditionally come from the New South Wales and Queensland regions you’ll be visiting.

Because it is such a remote island-nation, Australia ’s ecosystem is different that much of the rest of the world. A recent book on the subject suggests that over 90% of all living things (plants, animals, insects, etc.) in Australia exist nowhere else in the world. Whether you are lucky enough to encounter a kangaroo, wallaby or koala in the wild you will surely see things you have never seen before. Your tour will take you to one of the most historic cities Down Under.

Sydney is Australia 's premier city, the oldest settlement on the continent, the economic powerhouse of the nation and the country's capital in everything but name. Built on the shores of stunning Port Jackson, you would have to die and go to heaven before you see a more spectacular setting for a city. It's a vital, self-regarding metropolis, exuding both a devil-may-care urbanity and a slavish obsession with global fads.

Despite its brutal European beginnings as a British penal colony, the city's mixture of pragmatic egalitarianism and plain indifference has transformed it into a thriving multicultural society with an out-and-proud gay community. The Sydney area was originally the ancestral home of the Eora tribe, and evidence of its original Aboriginal inhabitants survives in some 2000 rock engravings and suburb names.

Your tour will also include stops along the Gold Coast. Whether it’s Brisbane or Surfer’s Paradise this unique region enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year. It is a haven for foreigners who come to enjoy the many beaches and golf courses. It is also a popular getaway spot with the Aussies. Whether it’s the Radisson Resort Gold Coast or the Royal on the Park in Brisbane you are sure to enjoy this beautiful tourist area.

Assemble in Los Angeles for pre-tour orientation. Evening program includes program orientation meeting as well as dinner with coaches and teammates.

Full day of seminars at your Los Angeles area hotel.  In preparation for your trip, hear experts talk on topics like college recruiting, off-season conditioning and strength-training, the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs and alcohol as well as softball-specific topics like pitching, hitting and baserunning. This evening you will depart Los Angeles for Sydney, Australia.  The overnight flight includes meals, movies, and beverage services.

This day is “lost” in crossing the International Date Line. However, the time is “regained” on the way home.

Arrive Sydney . After clearing Australian customs and immigration formalities, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to hotel for check-in. This afternoon, an orientation of your Coogee Beach Resort area is planned and free time to unpack, relax and recover from the flight.

A morning cruise of Sydney Harbor provides you with a great overview of the city. Be certain to bring your camera as the Opera House is perfectly seen from the boat deck.

Featherdale Wildlife Reserve features kangaroos you can feed, emus, wallabies, Tasmanian Devils, platypus, and of course, koalas. You can even have a photo taken with a koala! Also, visit the site of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Spend the morning at the beach, enjoying the South Pacific waves, sand and sun.

A day off from softball today. Take the jetcat ferry from Manly to downtown Sydney for time in the Rocks region of the city. Site of the first British Colony in Australia , the area is full of great shops and restaurants. Then, over to Darling Harbour and the Sydney Aquarium with its “walk-thru” shark tanks. Then, on the city’s monorail to Centerpoint Tower and mall.

Fly north today to Brisbane , capital of Queensland . Hotel check-in on arrival. Tour Manager’s orientation of the local area.

Depart Brisbane for the Gold Coast. After hotel check-in, explore Surfer’s Paradise as you like. Beaches, shopping, great golf……its all there! This evening, the Gold Coast Series kicks off with first round games.

This afternoon, the round-robin games of the series continue.

Today features the final games of the round-robin part of the series. When not on the field, time is available for the beach, shopping or relaxing.

The playoff games of the tournament are scheduled for today. Following the final games, a farewell BBQ for all teams and an informal Awards Ceremony wind up the Gold Coast Series.
