If you are interested in being considered for travel in 2008 and would like to submit a video application for review, please follow the directions specific to your position below. If you have any questions regarding creating a video, please call our West Region office at (928) 854-9455.

A highlight video allows us to evaluate your skills accurately. Keep in mind, your video should include footage that will allow our staff to evaluate your skills hitting, fielding, throwing (or pitching) and running. We are not critiquing your video editing skills, so don't worry about making yours look like a segment on ESPN.

Here are a couple things you want to keep in mind:
  • Shoot the footage in a practice setting.  Do not attempt to get game footage -  it's too difficult to get useful shots.  Use your local field, gym (if it's too cold), or a batting cage.
  • Limit the length of the tape to no more than 10 minutes.
  • Use a tripod at all times so the camera doesn't shake.
  • Convert the finished tape to VHS format.  Use a sticker to label the tape with your name, graduation year, position, address, and phone number.  Make sure to write the title - i.e. "Jeff Wilson's highlight tape (2011 Grad)"

Introduction

Place the camera on a tripod a few feet away and introduce yourself.  Speak clearly and confidently. Include:

  • Full name and date of birth
  • School name and your coach's name
  • City and state where you live
  • Height & weight
  • Position(s)

 PITCHERS

Shots 1-12:  Place the camera half way between home plate and the mound directed at the pitcher. It should be slightly toward 3B if you're a righty, or slightly toward 1B if you're a lefty. Avoid filming from the behind the catcher or backstop; it's too far away.  We want to evaluate your mechanics.

Shots 13-21:  Place the camera behind the pitcher and capture the flight of the ball to the catcher.  It should be positioned slightly toward SS if you're a righty, or slightly toward 2B position if you're a lefty.

OUTFIELDERS  --  Stand in right field, about 280 feet field from the plate.

Shots 1-4:  Place the camera at the 2B's position.  The cameraman should get a close up of you so we can evaluate your footwork, positioning, and mechanics.   Keep the camera focused on you - do not let the cameraman follow the flight of the ball.  Make sure to throw a line-drive, one-hopper to 3B.  You can use a cut-off man in the infield for a target only, but do not let him cut the ball.

Shots 5-10:  Place the camera behind the third base line and then behind the catcher so the coach can evaluate the flight of the ball.

Shots 1-6:  Place the camera between the mound and home plate.  Have the cameraman focus on you and capture all your movements in the frame and the last 15 feet or so of the ball before it reaches you.  We want to evaluate your hands, footwork, the way you circle the ball, and your throwing mechanics.

Shots 7-12:  Place the camera behind 1B so the coach can see the flight of the ball.

CATCHERS -- We need to see you throw and block in full gear.

Shots 1-9:  Place the camera between home plate and the mound. Have your partner throw balls in the dirt right at you, to your left and to your right. You should block 3-4 balls in each position.

Shots 10-15: Place the camera behind home plate. Start in your crouch and have your partner roll balls in front of the plate for you to make throws to 1B and 2B.

Shots 16-20:  Place the camera behind 2B. Have your partner stand about 15 feet in front of the plate and flip you balls so you can make throws to 2B. Be sure you start in your crouched position.

 HITTING

Place the camera about 10 feet away from the hitter so his whole body fills the screen.  You can take swings on a hitting tee, with your partner doing flip toss (partner down on one knee -- you hitting into net/screen), or hitting live. If you hit live, be sure your partner uses and L-screen. We'd like to see you take 15-20 swings.

 RUNNING

At our tryouts we evaluate players running a 60 yard dash or a simple home to 1B. You can do either. If you run a 60yd., we recommend you run on a local football field so you can be sure of the distance. You can start from either a lead-off position or a sprinter's stance. Be sure to run hard through the finish.

If you run a home to 1B, get in the batter's box and take a full swing before sprinting through 1B. Again, run hard through the bag. In either case, we can use a stopwatch to time your run right on the tape.
